Lynda Benglis is one of Americas most important artists. After starting her career as a painter/sculptor in the mid 1960s in New York she became a leader of Post Minimalism along with Richard Serra, Eva Hesse and Bruce Nauman. Her interest in process led her to expand the possibilities of material from latex pourings and expansions to more precious materials such as glass and gold. Spanning 40 years her creative output ranges from early wax reliefs and polyurethane sculptures, cantilevered installations, to videos, Polaroids as well as work in ceramics, glass, paper and neon. This important monograph is published on the occasion of a travelling exhibition with venues in Dublin, Eindhoven, Dijon, Rhode Island and the New Museum in New York. Essays by Elisabeth Lebovici, Judith Tannenbaum, Caroline Hancock, Franck Gautherot, Laura Hoptman and an artist statement by Richard Tuttle. Also includes a chapter on the controversial Artforum ad in November 1974.

This is the best book for an overview of her work.
The others that I have seen are more limited, with basically the same
work but fewer images.
Her work leading into the fountain sculptures, is
a breakthrough in organic sculpture. Unfortunately, there are
few images of the fountains in this book, but there are excellent
photos of fantastical creations in the same vein.
Her forte is working with trendy, offbeat materials like canned insulation.
She is called "innovative" but except for a few styles done in the 70's and
80's, and her delightful ceramics, there is disappointingly little innovation.
At this point, she seems to lean on natural textures of the raw material
as skin over conventional forms. In other words she knows how to exploit a gimmick.
Overall, she lacks the personal vision of artistic greats like Kiki Smith, and
in my opinion, is closer to a designer than fine artist.
Nonetheless, all artists will find inspiration in her better pieces.
